2016 Thor Outlaw 38re Step issue
On my 2 previous motor homes you could engage the step switch to either keep the steps in or out when the situation dictates. Now on my Outlaw the step switch will kepp the step out but if I turn it on before I open the door it wont hold the step in.... is this how the new step works or is there something thats not working right

This is a "safety improvement". Evidently some knucklehead shut them off, didn't look and did a face plant.

If you want to keep steps in with door open tape a magnet over the switch.

Well that is not exactly what I mean sometimes I'm parked next to something where the steps won't go out completely so I'd rather them just stay in when I'm going in and out the coach. Like I said in my other 2 coaches by turn on the step switch it would keep the step out when parked or it would keep the step in if you turned it on before you opened the door

well i see the new improved step doesnt allow you to keep it in the retracted position, not sure whose bright idea that was but I find it stupid

Wow you are correct AITG , I just found the manual online on my steps and it does state you can not keep the steps in the retracted position as an improvement. STUPID that is all LOL

I solved the problem by adding a switch, fuse and relay to the power circuit. Do NOT add just a switch-too much current for the switch.

Safety or liability...same result.
The steps WILL extend when the door opens.
A simple SPST switch added to the power lead to the step motor could "freeze" the step in the position it sits when the switch is thrown. Just get a switch with a heavy enough amp rating...should exceed the amperage of the step's fuse (can't remember what that is right now).
It could be covered with a toggle switch guard to prevent accidental use:

Would be kind of hard to do that when there is no space between the door metal attachment and the frame magnet when the door is closed but thanks for the idea best bet would be to add a switch between the power wire going to step to kill the power when I want it to stay in the retracted position.

As a side note, there are only 2 wires going to the step motor. The step motor changes direction by Flipping polarity - which happens within the controller.
So, a switch in the motor wires can be installed in either wire...makes no difference which is picked...
