30 amp vs. 50 service

I'm having trouble with my power controller...I can either replace it at several hundred dollars or rewire my 30 amp, 2000 Fleetwood Flair...is that possible and how much of a job is it...? Is it just a matter or replacing the outside black wire to 50 amp service ?

New 50A power cord long enough to be wired into new panel
OR if using a detachable cord then New 50A receptacle and plug on new cord Plus enough wiring to go new panel (4 wires #6 min)
New AC Power Panel for 50A (2 hots, 1 neutral, 1 ground)

Course that means having access to run the new wiring from where cord enters to the new AC Panel

I re-wired my Itasca a few years back converting it to 50 amp. It was the best mod I made on that motor home.

It's not a simple job, but someone competent in electrical work can do it. You must have a 50 amp Automatic Transfer Switch first of all. I was lucky in that my Itasca had a 50 amp ATS, even though it was only wired for 30 amp. You have to run new 6ga, four conductor rubberized shore cord to the ATS, then you have to run 6ga, four conductor household wire to the circuit breaker panel. If it's not already set up for 240v, dual leg service, then you will have to replace the breaker panel.

That's some big ifs. If you have to replace the ATS and the breaker panel, it could get expensive. If all you need is new wiring, then it could be under $200 for the entire job.

Here is a link to a web site that can give you more information. I used this as a guide when I re-wired mine.

Based on your question. It can be done but not by you. I do not mean any offense but if you have to ask this kind of question you do not have enough of the basic knowledge needed to do it safely. Try to find someone that knows how to wire RV systems. The average house electrician will have a lot of problems doing this also. It is not going to be a cheap conversion.

You would need to add a subpanel and split circuits, plus replace your transfer switch at a minimum. Fairly simple IF you know how, otherwise let an expert do it.
