454 compression?
Can anyone tell me the acceptable range of compression for a 1998 454
V-8 L mounted in a 1998 Bounder 34 (61k miles). Thinking of buying and trying to avoid a nasty surprise later. Thanks in advance from Seattle. Mike

170-180 all around. Take all plugs out, remove coil wire, crank ea. cyl 4 or more turns, but do all the same. If you have any below this range, remove the gauge & put a squirt of 30wt oil in the cyl, wait 60 seconds, redo the test to see if cyl comes up. If no that cyl has a weak valve seat, if yes then weak rings.

hold the throttle at wot also. this will allow for the maximum amount of air into the cylinder and should cause the PCM to enter a flood mode and stop the injector pulse.

Hi I am new to the site and just had to join after reading this thread.I agree with all of the above comments and would like to add a couple of things.
First off make sure that this unit has not been sitting over the winter and you decide to do it with the engine cold.If it has been sitting take it out on the road and run it. I have been a mechanic for 40 years and have seen some horrible repairs made to units that only required bring them up to temp.
I have seen the same thing with aircraft time and time again. Comes out of storage and the mechanic grabs the tester and wow he rubs his hand and has just sold you a repair job.
First rule ...Run up to temp. Than test
