460 backfire

I am having trouble with my Ford (1994) 460. It looses power and backfires, runs OK for a short time and starts all over again. I changed the fuel filter and treated fuel tank for water. Plugs and wires new last fall. Any ideas?
I do not want to just start changing parts.
Thanks
Divad

Cracked Distributor cap...
Fuel pressure up to spec...
Exhaust restrictions.....
Don't recall if that engine has an airflow sensor, perhaps that...or EGR...
You can eliminate all of these before tossing in the parts routine...
Might do a compression test on all 8, that could be informative...
I'll bet the right answer shows up here ..in just a minute!

Welcome to irv2.
When I had a 460 under the air cleaner I had a air valve, plastic that melted with a hole through it and cause all kinds of problems.
Take a look you may have same problem.
Replaced the valve was good to go.

The check engine light is not lit. Hoping to check codes this weekend.

Does it backfire through the exhaust or intake? Big difference.

If the sel light is not illuminated than you do not have an emissions related problem. I would definitely check out your basic electrical components--dist cap, wires, etc.

Sometimes a bad coil will cause a backfire.
