5% Discount on Fuel Pen Fed Credit Union

Pen Fed Credit Union offers a visa card that offers 5% off all fuel purchases. They must be "at the pump" meaning you must scan the card at the pump instead of going inside to have it charged. No limit on purchase, credit is given on your monthly statement every month. No fee for the card 1% off all other purchases.

Anyone have any experience with this program? Any comments would be appreciated. 5% off with diesel approaching $4 a gallon, a $0.20 savings would be worth $20 a tank.

Thanks

We use it and are happy with it. Sometimes it is difficult to deal with the $75 limit put on the pumps at many stations and it becomes an irritant when you can only scan the card twice. (knowing that you are going to pay 4% more if you go inside)They deduct the 5% right off of the monthly bill and not in reward points!

PenFed Visa

I have the PenFed Visa. I know I get 5% off on gasoline purchases and that the the discount is immediate, not at the end of the year like Costco's American Express. I could be wrong but I do not believe the 5% applies to diesel.

It does if you swipe at the pump or RV lanes at Flying J. It's a great deal with no set maximum.

Thanks for the tip on diesel. I was interpreting the PENFed website statement literally.
  • Earn 5.00% Cash Back on Gas
  • Earn 2.00% Cash Back on Supermarket Purchases
  • Earn 1.00% Cash Back on Net Monthly Purchases
  • Cash rewards paid each month
  • Up to $50,000 limit
An earlier post didn't mention the 2% on supermarket purchases. I often buy fuel and groceries at Fred Meyer on I-5. They deduct $.10/gallon once a month if you have purchased $50 at their supermarket, ($.03/gallon otherwise). At today's price you get a total of $.27/gallon off for gas, more for diesel.

I'm a PenFed fan. PenFed's superior rates and this Visa card are the only benefits I can think of from serving in the Army in the 60s.

PenFed was hacked into several weeks ago. Over 100,000 members info pilfered, including mine.

Anybody have an update ??

You do not have to be ex military to join Pen Fed. If you look at their web site or speak with them, there are lots of other affiliations that apply.

For example, I was a volunteer for the Red Cross and still give blood. That qualifies.

Most credit unions have broadened their memebership requirements to find a place for almost everyone.

I did speak with them when I signed up re diesel. As others have indicated, diesel is covered at long as the card is swiped at the pump for 5%. If you buy inside, it would only be 1 or 2%

Mine was one of the accounts affected, but it was just the credit card, and PenFed issued me a new card. I also have a credit freeze placed with Experian, Equifax and Trans Union. While fees depend on your state of residency, in most cases they're waived if you're 65 or older, or a victim of ID theft. More info here: Credit Freeze and Thaw Guide | www.clarkhoward.com

I just applied and appreciate the information given here. This will save a few dollars at the pump.
