50 amp Coach into 30 amp service with power management
Hope to take delivery of the new coach this weekend if all goes well. I breezed thru the manuals rather quickly but what did catch my eye was the power management system. It sounded like this system would determine what power was available either 50A, 30A or 15A and would load shed accordingly not to try to draw more power than is available at the time. Im thinking this is great as I only have 30A available at the house and all I need to do is get a 50 to 30A adapter. So here is where it gets a little tricky. I noticed that some of the adapters simply bridge the two 115V pins together so power will be available at all circuits in the motorhome. With the two pins Bridge together I would think this power management system would assume it's now connected to a 50 amp and would not load shed as required. I know it would be simpler just to manage the power myself like avoid running both air conditioners at the same time but this would defeat the purpose of the power management system at least hooked to shore power. Then my question is should I get a 50 to 30 amp adapter without the two pins bridged or is this even a option?

RV 50 amp service is two legs of 50 amps on each leg 180º out of phase from each other. Your EMS will be able to tell that if both legs are in phase, it's not 50 amp service. I'd imagine the EMS will have to be manually set to determine when you're only hooked up to a 15 amp outlet.

Not clear what you mean by shed load. You use a 50 to 30 adapter at the campground’s panel, and watch what you try to turn on lest you trip the 30a breaker at that panel.
I suppose that’s considered shedding the load, but it isn’t the coach that’s doing the shedding.
Can you clarify what you mean?

An Energy Management System (EMS) monitors power coming into the RV and determines if it's 50 amp or 30 amp service. On 30 amp service, it won't allow both A/C to be on at the same time, or multiple other high amp using items like the microwave, hair dryer, etc. that might require more than the 30 amps available. It has relays that turn off power to high amp drawing items, thus 'shedding' them so you don't trip the breaker.

This is different than an Electrical Management System, (EMS) is a surge protector and monitor that prevents a miswired pedestal or a weak electrical supply from providing dangerously high or low voltages from damaging your RV systems.

Got it, and duly educated.
I didn’t realize there was a system that would make those choices in real time.

It’s the voltage between the two hot legs. When connected to a true 50amp source, the voltage between the two hot legs is 240vac because they are out of phase. When using a dogbone, both hots are powered by the same phase with 0vac between then. The management system see that as a 30amp source.
And yes, you have to manually select 15amps.

To go one step further if you have a 50 amp coach and use both a 30 amp and a 15 amp drop down adapters in conjunction with each other and the only need is to keep batteries charged is there any settings that need to be changed or will inverter adjust automatically?

If you have an energy management system, you could reset it to 15 A. But if you know you're only plugged in to charge batteries, I wouldn't see the need. I don't know what you're talking about "settings on the inverter". If you're talking about an inverter/charger, no settings need changing.

Got it...wasn't sure if the EMS looked at power on both pins or 220vac as its my understanding even though 50A rigs have 220 potential most do not utilize 220vac.

Even with a EMS I find helping it out works better. One of the biggest variables that confuses it is your battery charger which starts out drawing a lot of power and then over time tappers off. Yesterday I was on a 20 amp circuit needing to run 1 AC and the DW wanting to use the microwave. By manually shutting the charger off (it was in bulk charging) we didn’t trip the 20A breaker.
I could have manually set the power to 15A and with the inverter on run both at the same time (inverter providing the additional power) but that brief change in power source kicks my DVRs off and then it takes 10 minutes for them to reboot.

Sure would help all the speculation if the OP posted what RV they had
On my Bounder it automagically detects 50/30Amp service. If I have plugged into a lower amperage outlet I need to manually select 20 or even 15 amp service.
The shedding of loads is pretty magical once it knows what is available. I've never tripped a pedestal breaker. I can also run both ACs on 30A service. Was also able to run one AC on 15A service - just make sure you have a high quality adapter.
