50 amp service at home.
I'm having a service installed at home and was wondering if there is a way to verify the ground and neutral aren't swapped at the box if all the wire is the same color.

I just found this post:

Can't tell you if it is accurate or not, but it looks pretty.

you could run a tracer on both and verify at the box. Was wondering why your neutral isn't white and your ground is green. Normal installation is 6 gauge red, 6 gauge black and 6 gauge white and ground can be 6, 8 or 10 gauge. You can also wrap them in a colored elect. tape at both ends to help identify the ground and the neutral.

I'm not an electrician, but I did sleep and a Holiday Inn Express once upon a time...
If all wire have the same color insulation, they should be marked with tape at each end i.e., white, red, black, and green. (or what ever color)
I think code call for this!
This is exactly what I did. Bought a 500' spool, cut the lengths needed and put colored tape on the ends, before pulling, to identify them.

If an electrician installed then you should have no worries. The 4 wire 50 amp double pole breaker is wiring 101. The hots should be black & red, the neutral is white and the ground is bare copper. These wire colors should be visible in the box that houses the breaker.

Yeah..he's using all same color wire and I'm not sure if he's going to flag the ends. I'm not there and am researching while away. I know how to use a meter to check the pedestal for correct voltage but as far as I know only a visual inspection can tell if ground and neutral are swapped and you can't tell if they aren't marked.

If the electrician did not color code the wiring, then the only way to verify is to disconnect the ground at the new receptacle and check continuity back to the panel feeding the receptacle. If all of the wires are the same size and the circuit is being fed from a 'Main' panel then there should not be a problem since the neutral and ground are bonded at a 'Main' panel. If the circuit is being fed from a 'Sub' panel then it is imperative that the neutral and ground be properly identified.

FWIW I am not sure it matters. Assuming there is no sub panel in the path the place the neutral and ground are connected together is the main panel box. If he is pulling 4 wires that are the same color and the hot's are correct either of the other wires can go to ground and the other go to neutral as they will be the same at the panel.
I would check the hots are at the right place before I plugged in! Nothing personal but too many years of proving Murphy was an optimist. ;-)
FWIW2 I would not expect a home installation to be wired like a park installation. Looking at the way parks are wired they should have a ground rod at the pedestal and connect neutral and ground there. For a home installation I would expect a relatively short run without the extra ground rod to avoid ground looping.

I'd be highly suspicious of any work done by an "electrician" who didn't use properly color coded wires. Plain and simple - an installation that isn't color coded fails to meet not only the letter of the code - but more importantly, the intent of the code. I'd keep my checkbook in my pocket until the job was done right.

If he didn't color code the wires then I wouldn't call him an electrician. My gosh I don't know of an electrician that doesn't carry marking tape with him.

Is the installer really an electrician or a friend who thinks they know what they are doing?

Pull the cover off and take a look. Set the breaker to off first.

If the ground and Neutral are the same color RUN as an IDIOT wired it.
Ground = Green or Bare copper
Neutral = White or possible light gray.
Hot wires can be Black, Red, Blue,
Did he even use the correct gauge wire?
#6 copper for 50 amp
Ground can be #10

As said in previous reply, electrically and code wise, as long as last 4-6" is marked with the proper color tape all is good. One very important feature that I have not heard mentioned is this plug is considered for outdoor use, therefore make sure your breaker is a ground fault breaker. Expensive, but many are killed with a lot less amperes.
