50 amp transfer switch or generator

I have 2000 motorhome with Generac generator,it sometimes has to be restarted twice for 110 volt to take hold.Any ideas weather it is transfer switch or generator causing problem?

Wont know until you check out both with a voltmeter---transfer should emit an audible click or cluck when the contacts open/close....normally, the default position for the transfer switch is to give priority to the genset over shore power....so should hear a click/cluck when going to shore power.....my "guess" is if you hear the click and the switch always goes to shore power, you may have a genset issue....

When starting generator, hold start switch on for 10 - 20 seconds. That will make sure the field flashes.

When you start the generator engine and it starts producing 120 volt electric power, the transfer switch will sense this.

After a 20 to 30 seconds delay, to let the engine stabilize, it will open the shore power contactor, if shore power is connected, and engage the generator contactor, sending generator power thru the switch.

Make sure you are waiting at least 30 seconds for the transfer switch to work.

If it doesn't transfer in that time, listen to the engine and see if it's running smooth. If it's running rough, it may not be reaching operating speed right away.
