8.1 Vortec Airfilter

I recently purchased a f2004 Winnebago Sightseer 35N with an 8.1 Vortec engine. When I attempted to change the air filter it was wrapped in a sponge like material. What is the purpose of this and is it necessary?????

I suppose it's a sort of pre-filter. Mine had one too. The new one that I got from NAPA also has it.

I suspect Delco thought it was needed or they would not have speced it. They don't spend any more money than necessary.

Thank you. It seems this would choke the engine. Did you install it also?

i use a k&n oiled gauze filter pn#33-2062-1 with no prefilter. the next one i buy will be an s&b oiled gauze filter pn#66-2014D because it is thicker for better filtration. they both flow air better and last longer than paper filters.

There is an AC Delco filter available without the foam prefilter to fit the 8.1. It is part number A917C.
