97 HR Navigator - Fuel Filter and Hydraulic Pump

My 97 HR Navigator - Roadmaster Chassis got me stranded on the road with no fuel going issues. I also got oil all over my mud flap and the back of the engine. I believe it came from the air compressor / steering pump area.

Need your advices:

1) Winn fuel filter – Primary fuel filter: what do you have in place of it or still have the original one?

2) Steering/Hydraulic Pump: do you have any info about it such as model name or part number or maybe repairable?

Thanks
Michael

Hard to say without more information...

Sounds like you have a Cummins 8.3L Mechanical engine and a side radiator (due to comments about hydraulic pump).

We had a fuel line on the top of the same Cummins 8.3L engine wear away while on the road once (chafing where the cloth/fabric hose wore away under a 'stay' to hold it in place. Diesel fuel everywhere; what I noticed was "rain" on the rear-view camera when it wasn't raining outside. I pulled over and ... wow...diesel all over rear of coach and mudflap and absolutely coating the toad. Easy fix to replace the worn hose, and I hope that your issue is as easy. Raising the bed while the engine was running easily revealed the source of the leak. Since you aren't running, this may take more sleuthing.

I guess what I'm saying is - we first need to know what the fluid is that sprayed. If you are in a no-fuel situation, I'm guessing diesel and not hydraulic because if that were the case you'd have no steering (and possibly overheating if side radiator) but the engine would run. Since you aren't running, it doesn't sound like hydraulic fluid (although it could be both fuel and hydraulic?)

So - can you say if it is diesel for sure (which fits with the no-run situation)?

On the same previous rig (as above), there were 2 fuel filters; one at the rear of the rig (large primary) and a smaller secondary up high towards the front of the coach/rear of the engine. Both of these have fuel lines running to and from them and there could be a leak at either filter or between or anyplace else the fuel line runs.

Any more information available from you would help others give suggestions.

Good Luck and sorry this happened to you. I know the feeling and it isn't pleasant to say the least!!!

Hi ziaptrn,

Yes, it is Cummins 6CTA 8.3L Mechanical engine and a side radiator.

My Primary fuel filter is a discontinued Winn system (#1 in my attached picture). My no start or no fuel issue is from the Winn system leaking. I ordered a Racor 790R30 replacement for it.

I will clean up the oil mess tomorrow, hope to pin point exactly where is the leak from, and hope for the best.

Thanks,
Michael
