AC start up Question

I was running on Generator power and turned on the AC's today for the first time this season. They just hummed and no air coming out so I quickly turned it off. Any ideas? Shall I try it again with shore power or maybe leaving it on and mumming longer in hopes that the humming will lead to the AC starting up? Please let me know what you think.

no ac start

john, it could be a starting capacitor bad, or it could just be a stuck fan. You may have to take the cover off the unit and try to turn it by hand. Sometimes they just rust a little and are temporarily stuck. Good luck with it. Steve

Mine did that this week, it was fine two weeks ago. I went on top to remove the cover and spin the fan blade, but did not have a square drive screw driver.. So I took a stick, put it trough the vent hole and moved the fan blade just a little, went down, turned the thermostat and it worked fine. Just moving the fan blade gets it going.. Someone recommended a drop of Bar & Chain oil on the fan shaft, Thats on my "to do" list.

Take the cover off the unit and spin the fan motor by hand. Hopefully it is free. Look for mud daubers or other things that could interfere with the fan. This should get you going... Don't keep trying to start the system until you insure the fan is free..

Got stink bugs? Friend had same symptoms. AC motor was jammed full of them.

Thanks guys. Taking the cover off and giving the fan a spin did the trick. This forum rocks !

I have one A/C that does this same thing about once every two years.

I get up on the roof, pull the cover and put a little bit of oil on the shaft. I also exercise it more during the winter now. It likes to be run every now and then.
