I agree with everything you say, but take a slight exception to this statement.
I believe the engineers came up with what best fits their stated requirements, which may or may not be the same as an individual's requirements.
One person may be a boondocker that is most concerned about ultimate power capacity, with less regard to total cost or maintenance issues.
The next person may always have full hookups and only need battery power to get from one resort to the next, so they may be more concerned about cost than capacity.
The next person may be most concerned about low maintenance.
The requirements that the engineers used to design the battery system is probably a reasonable compromise between potentially conflicting requirements: They likely wanted good capacity, at a reasonable cost that fit the available space and hit their target price point. Those requirements probably yield a good balance for most people, but some with exceptional requirements might be able to do better with a custom solution. That being said, paralleling a 12V with a pair of 6V is probably not in anybody's best interest.
