Adding Bleach to MH FWT

On my Newmar, it's basically a sealed system it appears. You fill the FWT with the city hose connection and a valve (I presume others are the same).

I have vent tubes for overflow on each end of the tank, but I see no viable way to actually add bleach to the tank for disinfecting. The coach sat for a while and the tank is probably clean, but needs to be disinfected.

Any tricks? I guess I can take the vent tube out, but other ideas would be appreciated.

Attach water hose to tank. Pour bleach into water hose and then attach hose to faucet.

Kevin, these work pretty good. I had one for my last motorhome, but my current one has a separate pour in access to the fresh water tank.

Fill the hose with bleach (however much you want), connect hose, fill tank..

I had same issue. My coach is the first one I have owned without a gravity fill. As others have stated pour bleach into a measuring cup and then into garden hose, attach hose to the fill port and turn it on. Bleach will go to the tank. I try to drive a little bit to slosh it around. Also turn on faucets etc. to distribute. Takes quite a while to flush the bleach smell back out though. I have had better luck with water tank sanitizer I bought at camping world, doesn't smell as much as bleach and is much faster to get out according to smell anyway.

Here is an alternate to pouring bleach into the hose, a less messy option. There various versions of this device they all have different mixture ratios.

Simply connect to hose and FW fill, stick the pick up tube in the bleach.

We Use some stuff for cleaning swimming pools.
I believe it's called bromine.
Just poor some of the powder in the hose, hook it up and add water.

Don't forget if you have a filter before your freshwater tank remove the filter before adding any chemicals. If that is your case you can put whatever chemicals you'd like in the filter canister once you remove the filter. Just something to remember/think about…

I just the use the winterize tube for adding bleach. Mix a 1/4 cup with a gallon of water, turn the winterize valve, turn on the pump and it sucks it right in. Use about 3 or 4 gallons of the mix then fill the tank as normal.

I know what you mean, I have a Newmar also. I have a sediment filter, which I remove when adding bleach, and put the bleach in where the filter goes and fill. If you do not have a sediment filter I suggest you install one.

I appreciate all of the responses, and I think I can formulate a plan. I wasn't entirely sure how the winterizing tube worked, but that actually sounds like the easiest, but I might also give the hose method a try.

Go to RV Geeks and watch their video. They have a Newmar and explain how to sanitize the tank. It is an excellent video.

Be careful on how much bleach. There is a "parts per million" that you need so not to end up with bleach smell in the pipes and tank. The Newmar specification is based on a bleach that is 5% concentration and many of the bleach bottles in the stores are now 8.25% concentration so adjust accordingly.
