Advice Needed: how to figure turning area needed
DW and I are trying to determine if a 45’ coach will fit in our RV parking spot. The length of the spot is more than adequate but the turning into it may be tight. Is there a formula to help determine this? I’d hate to buy a coach to find out it can’t make the turn. The previous owner of this house had a 32’ or 36’ Class A gasser in there so I’m pretty confident a 40’ wouldn’t be an issue but not sure if a 45’ would be an issue. I’ve politely asked the couple of trees to backup just a bit but they are holding their ground.
Any advice?

without a picture or a overview/diagram, it's going to be hard for anyone here to give you any free advice... : )

send a snapshot of the google overview/satellite view of the property, that makes it much easier to 'see' what situation you are referring to...

Another major difference is the type of chassis you are looking at. One with independent front suspension usually has a tighter turning radius than a solid front axle one. At least that's one major difference I found between our Freightliner and now the Power Glide IFS.

This is easy. Take one for a test drive and bring it home. Pick up a chain saw on the way.

Google Satellite View coming up and I'll confirm the front suspension. I believe it's independent but I'll double check...

We went from a 40' DP with no tag to a 45' with lifting tag. I 've found that the 45' gets into the same spots as the 40'. The tail swing is greater but has not been a problem.

Go to a large parking lot and find an empty area. The parking spaces are usually 10 feet wide and 20 feet long. Line up the coach and lock the steering wheel then make a turn and measure the distance. Go home and lay out the turning radius on your lot. If you want, you can call the mfg. but take that with a grain of salt.
Good luck, and let us know.

LT Dan, it does have an independent front suspension with a 60 degree wheel cut
MisterT
Please see attached. As you can see, the area is heavily treed. I can update the image to indicate where the trees are along the drive way if you need more details...

A buddy used to wear a t-shirt his dad got from the guys working on a freeway project in Philadelphia. It said: "Wait, I know a harder way"
Go get one and bring it home. You won't be stranded on a tropical island with Ginger and Mary Ann, I promise.

There are numerous utube videos on driving an rv. And I agree take it to a parking lot and check radius and tail swing. Good luck. Main point though, go get it first then play

To give you a bench mark on size - Our drive way is 18 feet wide and the cross road is 24 feet wide. We have a 2001 DSDP with wheel cut of 45 degrees, wheelbase of 252" and no tag. Our toad is a Caddy SRX. I am able to turn in or back in with a very small margin left. I can also drive in/out with the toad attached.
Happy hunting!

There's a big difference in the wheel base and rear overhang comparing a 36' gasser to a 45' diesel. I think the gasser can turn into much tighter areas than the diesel. The gasser's tail end is a much bigger percentage of the overall length of the RV than a diesels will be. What was easy with the gasser may be impossible with a 45' diesel. I'd do what others have already suggested and borrow or rent a 45' diesel and see if it can be done.
