Air Brake Check / How to

A Sample Air Brake Check

Start your engine to build the air supply
Engage the Fast Idle
Wait for the 'Puff' of Air (air tank(s) full)
Tap the Service Brake to release the Fast Idle

Shut the engine ‘Off’

Turn the key back to the ‘On’ position (don't start the engine)

Release the parking brake (Chock the wheels if necessary)

Fully apply the Service brake and hold it for 1 minute. Acceptable air loss is up to 3 PSI

Fan off the air pressure by pumping the Service brake

Two things need to happen prior to reaching 60 PSI -
1. Low Air Light on the dash needs to come on
2. Warning buzzer needs to sound

Fan off more air (pump the brake some more)...prior to 20 PSI -
The Parking Brake needs to activate (pop out)

Start the engine to rebuild the air

Close the door if not closed already

With the Parking Brake still on, gently try to drive away.
The Parking Brake needs to hold the Bus

Release the Parking Brake and drive ahead slowly and firmly stop the bus with the Service brake. There should be no pulling to one side or the other or a spongy feel to the brake pedal.

If the above doesn't happen...you probably have an issue that needs attention.

Just for the record and in an effort to not possibly confuse any of the folks on this forum...Details aren't missing.

Good luck but keep in mind if you are doing the class b testing in my state you need to do the pre trip part before the air brake part or you automatically fail? Yes do chock the wheels.
