Air brakes and air ride

Okay so looking at a class A gas rig, specifically the Thor Outlaw. But my question is why don't manufacturers build class A gas rigs with air compressors for the brakes and air ride. I have driven gas trucks with air compressors for the brakes and air ride. I know Thor and Newmar do not build this type. Any input would be grateful.

Money! When you are shopping for a MH does price alter your selections or do you decide to buy the MH then ask the price? I estimate that alteration would add about $20,000 to the price.

I believe it was Monaco that introduced a low budget DP years ago that had no air suspension along with hydraulic brakes. They eliminated air to make it more affordable. So Ray is correct, $ is the reason.

As the others have posted, it is all about the $$$. The gasser chassis suppliers, currently only Ford, don't offer it to the coach builders
and that may be one of the primary reasons the DP chassis is used under so many of even the most entry level products available.

In addition to the added cost, I think it may also be due to how much HP the compressor takes away from the motor, but I really don't know what that number is.

They would have to figure a way to mount a compressor, to the gas engine. Imagine the front of a V10 with that.

Most diesels are built with accessory drives for compressors and hyd. pumps.

I think the way to drive an air compressor in a gas engine MH would be to attach a compressor to the PTO output shaft of the automatic transmission. Of course that model transmission would have to be sourced for the chassis build first.

Kind of interesting. Our first coach was a 34ft '94 National Dolphin. It was a DP with a 5.9 Cummins and Allison 3060. It had steel springs and hydraulic disc brakes. The brakes were boosted from an electric vacuum pump, since the diesel does not have manifold vacuum.

All together it as a very good rig. The ride could not compare to our Newmar DP with air ride, but there is a 10,000 # weight difference, too.

Probably still have the Dolphin if it had slides....................
