One. Picked up a sharp piece of gravel / rock on the Cashiers Highway.

There was a time you could not travel the Alcan unless you had a spare tire, would check that out before leaving.

We were in a caravan of 22 coaches this last summer none of our group had a flat tire. There were several cracked windshields. I have 22 inch tires they are fine after the trip.

There are a lot of 18 wheelers that use the Alaska Highway, so road service is available, albeit a bit slow because of distances. I carry an unmounted tire, but never had any problems on the trip to Alaska last year. A few simple rules to save tires and coach: slow down. 200 - 300 mile days are the max you should shoot for. Slow down. Watch for orange markers denoting rough road or frost heaves. Slow way down when approaching other vehicles in the few gravel sections.

Drove almost all reasonable roads in Alaska with the 40'. Even the TOW and think I drive more terrible roads headed south every year in the 48 for the winter. Frost heaves were the only thing I remember as being bad. Yah there were a few gravel spots but I just slowed for the conditions. Did carry a tire just in case, but never saw a 22.5 flat.

We've done Alaska twice. Once with our 40' Beaver - 6 tires and once with our 45' Monaco - 8 tires and didn't have a flat on the 22.5" tires. However we did have one flat on our Jeep when we picked up a small rail road spike on the gravel road(old rail road bed) to McCarthy.

We were there on our trip this year from June to the end of September, four months, and covered a total of 14,200 miles from Florida and back.

NO FLATS.

Three tires were new and three are about 4-5 years old. They are all still on the RV and I see no reason to change them at this time. The older ones will be changed in a year or two.

We had heard while at the campground in Dawson of a Class A RV that went up the Dempster Hwy right after major chipsealing and while they carried TWO spares, they had THREE flats and ended up coming back to Dawson on a flat bed. All a rumor of course.

As anyone who has traveled that area knows, the way Canada does their chipsealing leads to many sharp rocks, which are a problem to tires and windshields, besides producing tremendous quantities of dust.

thx Dale

Alaska trip flat tires 22.5 tires

I lived in Alaska for 41 years and finally made the move down here to America. We drove the Alcan highway several times when it was all gravel and always had two spare tires on a roof rack. Sharp gravel was the culprit most times. MUD MUD MUD at that time and got stuck many times at washouts. One thing you should know is that when you come upon at
BUMP sign, slow way down. The bump signs here in Oregon are sometimes laughable because the bumps are hardly harsh. In Alaska the frost heaves and valley's can be quite large and can be frame benders. Highway is much better now hard surface for the most part. Don't forget to take a sledgehammer along for Mosquitoes. You can't kill em but you can stun em.

Hope you have a great trip.

Tom
