Allison Transmission smoked

I have a 98 Holiday Rambler Endeavor with a Cummins engine and Allison transmission. It has 40K miles on it. Periodically the transmission would not go into gear, then it would. So I took it to a big truck center here in San Antonio, with certified Allison mechanics. It had been giving a 2511 code, so everything I read led me to believe the problem was electronic. But the mechanic says it's internal, probably the C5 clutch or possibly a piston seal. He hooked up the computer for me and explained his diagnose. He has 25 years experience and pretty much convinced me that he was probably right. I'm still awaiting an estimate but I suspect it will be more than the whole RV is worth and I'll have to sell it for salvage.

Anyway, just thought there might be some folks that would want to comment....or at least offer condolences.

Any discoloration of the trans fluid ?
Were you getting the 2511 code from the pad ?

I had just had the transmission fluid changed at a different places. The said they didn't see a problem with the fluids. When I told him that was when he said it might be the seal, but that it is losing hydraulic pressure. He said he mostly replaces sensors and wiring on Allisons but this one was internal. Yes, it was giving a 2511 code on the shift pad, but the computer was much more detailed.

I've worked on Chrysler FWD 4spd automatics , that function similarly to the Allison and have replaced the failed clutch pack piston seals for similar issues .
Once the internal fluid pressures are off the trans functions go all to .... in a hand basket.
If they guarantee the diagnosis and repair then the only question is $$$.

Thanks. That was my take also. But it's good to hear someone else say it.

You might try calling Colaw in Missouri. They deal with used motorhome parts. They may have a transmission.
