Alternative display for Silverleaf VMSpc

So of course I need an engine monitoring system for my new Expedition. It looks like the Silverleaf is pretty much the only game out there (ScangaugeD doesn't seem to offer much more than the standard computer display on my dash).

I bought the display part (A Toshiba 11 Radius Touchscreen PC) and I'm about to order the Silverleaf next week. What I find a bit disappointing is the actual display quality. Its 2015 for crying out loud and the display looks like something from the MS DOS days. Has anyone improved on this?

The silverleaf for android looks just as dated. I have some experience tuning my race engine using aftermarket fuel injection systems and data logging programs. For reference, these computers and programs are very expensive but all have one thing in common... old, antiquated graphics and displays.

It is not unusual in this industry to not update the actual shell ( what you see on the screen) but keep supporting the software. Sometimes the old DOS look allows for a simplified, acceptable data transfer and the use of a old laptop to get the job done.

I use a 10 year old Toughbook computer mounted in my overhead storage. I ran a cable down to a 7" screen that I mounted in the center of my dash so I can monitor everything as I drive down the road. It works great for me.

I use a very inexpensive netbook mounted to a ram mount. Works very well.

First off, you can download the SilverLeaf program for free. Then select how you want the gauges to look.....they can be bar graphs, analog or digital. You can change their sizes and colors. You can add upper and lower limit alarms and many other parameters.

I think maybe you've been looking at some old style gauges selected by a particular user. Once you have the screen designed and laid out with the gauges you want, then just order the interface cable, the only part SilverLeaf charges for. RVUpgrades.com usually has the best price.

Here is my setup....if you think this looks like old fashioned gauges, then I guess SilverLeaf can't help you. I like using this older HP laptop because it comes with a 12 volt cord and I can make adjustments on the fly, like adjusting my mpg to match my engine.

Nope, I just bought this neat little Toshiba Radius (11" display, 4GB, 128GB SSD). Its not quite a MacBook Air, but its pretty cool. I have a 7" HDMI display I plan on mounting on my dash for the Silverleaf display.

I've got the Silverleaf SW loaded and am playing with it trying to figure out what I want to look at and how to arrange the instruments. I just wish they were a little flashier.

"jondrew".....I think the all in one units you buy from SilverLeaf have archaic screens, but have you seen their custom glass dash setups.....about $12K....now those look nice!

I have seen it. Pretty cool (not sure if its $12K cool). Maybe they'll upgrade the VMSpc to those style gauges

Where do you get the interface that allows you to connect the computer to the engine?

That is what a VMSpc is. The hardware to make the FREE software to work.

Make sure you get the one for your engine connections.

I run my 13 year old VMSpc hardware on a ME OS 15" Sony Laptop.
The hardware has been on, a always on 12V since installed.

I bought mine thru RV Upgrades and the support at Silverleaf is great. That is one of their distributors.

"Jimalberta".....Here is the interface cable you need to connect your coach to a laptop or tablet of your choice, as long as it has a USB port. You can also connect via Bluetooth, but I believe you have to buy some more components from SilverLeaf.

You need to see which vehicle connector you have on your coach (motor home version of OBDII port). Yours will be a round connector near your steering column and probably a 6 pin, same as my 05 coach. My new coach uses a 9 pin.
