There really isn't anything ambiguous about the regulations, it is just that you have to read it carefully. It is like one of the flow charts with yes/no gates.
Motorhome
......Is the GVWR > 26,000#?
.........Yes, do you pull a car/trailer >10,000#?
................Yes , Class A
................No , Class B
..........No, do you pull a car/trailer >10,000#?
................Yes, Class A
................No, Class C
Truck/Trailer Combo
......Is the GCWR > 26,000#
........... Yes, Is the trailer > 10,000#?
................Yes, Class A
................No, Class C
Yes, I'm a college graduate, no I didn't have any problems figuring it out.

Class C is a commercial license, which you do not need to drive an RV for personal use if you reside in Texas.

There are non commercial licenses in Texas, and which one you need is based on the above. I should know, I have a Class A!

Of course there are non-commercial licenses in Texas. My point was, the Class C is NOT required for an RV used for personal use. Class C is a commercial license.

No, in Texas a C license is the standard personal vehicle driver's license. Other states call them other things. It is NOT a CDL.

That what I thought too. I think the standard DL is called a Class C in many states. Not sure where this idea of it being a commercial license came from.

Sarah,
Obviously you haven't bothered to look at the Texas Drivers handbook, maybe you should go review it before posting.

Class C is a normal citizen's auto drivers license
Here's the actual Texas Transportation Code Title 7 subtitle B section 521.....
SUBCHAPTER D. CLASSIFICATION OF DRIVER'S LICENSES
Sec. 521.081. CLASS A LICENSE. A Class A driver's license authorizes the holder of the license to operate:
(1) a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more; or
(2) a combination of vehicles that has a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, if the gross vehicle weight rating of any vehicle or vehicles in tow is more than 10,000 pounds.
Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, Sec. 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.
Sec. 521.082. CLASS B LICENSE. (a) A Class B driver's license authorizes the holder of the license to operate:
(1) a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating that is more than 26,000 pounds;
(2) a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds or more towing:
(A) a vehicle, other than a farm trailer, with a gross vehicle weight rating that is not more than 10,000 pounds; or
(B) a farm trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating that is not more than 20,000 pounds; and
(3) a bus with a seating capacity of 24 passengers or more.
(b) For the purposes of Subsection (a)(3), seating capacity is computed in accordance with Section 502.162, except that the operator's seat is included in the computation.
Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, Sec. 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.
Sec. 521.083. CLASS C LICENSE. A Class C driver's license authorizes the holder of the license to operate:
(1) a vehicle or combination of vehicles not described by Section 521.081 or 521.082; and
(2) a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 26,001 pounds towing a farm trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating that is not more than 20,000 pounds.
Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, Sec. 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.

Sorry for the confusion. I was thinking "CDL" when I typed my response to Barbara. Joe is correct.

I'm always amazed at the lengths to which people will go to trying to avoid getting either a Class A or a Class B non-CDL driver's license in Texas!
As Barb pointed out, the written and driving test isn't difficult...and if you can't pass one or the other, you have no business driving a large vehicle.
When we were domiciled in Texas, we pulled a fifth wheel with an MDT and needed to get Class A driver's licenses. We took our tests in Van Horn where we were required to parallel park our fifth wheel. I, who had never even backed up the fifth wheel before, was able to pass the test after my husband spent about half an hour teaching me to back up in an empty parking lot. If I can pass the driving test under those circumstances, anyone can.
