But why would it need both ends designed to fit into the socket - left and right hand orientation? Lol.

That is sooo funny - mainly cos it's sooo true! Quickest way ever to find out what anything is? Just toss it. Is that why I (and probably most of us) tend to keep everything?

I believe it is either a super quiet mouse abatment device, OOOOR one of them hair rollers that ya used to put in the steam box kind contraption. I know you said it was 24" long but don't ya remember the size of womens hair back in the day?
