Not at all new. It simply wasn't common except in very high end models, Prevosts conversions, Newells, Wanderlodges, etc. I recall parking next to a Royale Prevost back around 1998 and soon learned that his generator (16KW!) started occasionally. Turned out, he had a 240v stove/oven, 240v clothes dryer, and a 240v heater element for the Aquahot system. He could occasionally exceed what the 50A shore pole could supply, and his coach automatically started the genset when needed to supplement power.
Nowadays there are quite a few more coaches in that class and with major power consumption needs.
