Are DP owners clueless?

For the third time this week before 8 am some yahoo in his Class A DP has decided to stop near my spot to hook up his toad. No big deal but leaving the engine running is ridiculous. I own one and understand the air pressure build up and all that, BUT COME ON PEOPLE!

If i have to stop after i start, it is usually by the exit of the park so I won't disturb anyone.

Sounds like you need to find a different spot if that bugs you that much.

It's not pusher owners but pretty much some diesel owners in general.
They're used to the noise and smell , and figure the everybody else is too.
I was in a park in Fort St. John , B.C. on a frosty morning , 6:30 AM { self edit} ..... with a diesel truck fired up his truck using his remote start, then took a shower and had breakfast , ran for 45 mins. just so he didn't have to jump into a cold truck.
Coming out of Costco , diesel truck owner waiting to load his new fridge, with truck running , exhaust pointed at the main entry less than 20 feet away.

If I move the coach so I can hook up the toad, I shut off the engine until I'm done, then get on my way. Extended idle is bad for the engine.

I try to be courteous as possible. Fire it up get air pressure and pull out. I try to make sure everything else is ready to go so no delays. Always hook up away from anyone else even if that requires driving down the road.

Peralko, As a retired over the road trucker I can tell you the diesel engine is not hurt in any way by extended idling. A gasoline engine is what you said. Diesels can idle for hours, days weeks as long as there is fuel.

"Cummins does NOT recommend excessive idling of the engines, since it can cause excessive carbon buildup on the pistons, piston rings, injector tips, valves, etc."

I believe some diesel engines are prone to "wet stacking" and prolonged idling can cause performance issues. I'm not sure that pertains to over the road trucks though.

This WAS an accepted practice in the past, like I ran my ol' 7.3 in the F350 for long idle periods. But, the tech in new Diesel's emissions systems have changed everything.

For the OP, we were recently very near the main driveway of a campground and noticed the same thing. We have a VERY well insulated RV and it was buttoned-up for the AirCon, but it was still noticeable. Maybe ask to move?

Safe travels

So I guess to some that idling in front of other rigs before 8 am is OK? That pulling forward towards the office or shutting down while you hook up is not a viable option? I guess a little common sense or courtesy may be to much to ask.

The bottom line here is the fact that people are becoming more and more clueless of common courtesy for their fellow man. All they think about is themselves and nothing around them. Sad thing it is but true. Funny how this turns into a diesel idling disagreement.

Maybe in the old days, but now Caterpillar recommends minimum idling, unless you set the engine to high idle, which is a lot worse for fellow campers.
