Just curious. How many of you have really found miswired electrical power outlets at campgrounds? Any damage to your rig?

My brother's neighbor found a newly rewired 30 amp site for his 50 amp 5er. Blew the TV, DVD and power converter. Electrican wire it like a 220 volt 3 prong plug. So far the campground has not paid a dime toward the repairs on his less than a year old trailer. Looking to take the place to small claims court since he lives near there.

Only thing I have found was an intermittent ground fault in a campground that was in the midst of a lot of rewiring.

I came back from a recent trip and found one of the prongs on my 30Amp plug was discolored and the rubber around the base of the plug was damaged. I think the site socket was defective and overheated my plug. I don't know if it was damaged internally but I am replacing the plug.

My DW considers me to be overly cautious about plugging in without checking for proper polarity. In all the campgrounds we have been to over the years, I have only found two that were a problem.
One was a private CG that we were overnighting in and when the problem was found the owners gladly moved us to another site. As we were leaving the next morning, I saw a service truck pulling up to the problem site, so hopefully they were getting it taken care of.
The other time was at a COE site that was booked full. Fortunately, the host was a retired electrician who very quickly came to the site and verified what my test equipment had shown. The post had just been rewired, and the "licensed" electrician had trouble seeing the difference in black and white wires!

I highly recommend the use of a Surge Guard or equivilent devise. It not only checks the circuit for proper wiring but also high, low voltage, has built in time delay and offers surge protection in the event of an electrical spike from lightning or a line short up the power grid. If the pedastal is not right it will not connect the source to the coach. I know it has saved our coach a few times over the last four + years.

We just came back from Yellowstone (Fishing Bridge) where the outlet had a problem. It wasn't "mis-wired" but the wire from the hot spade back to the breaker had been left loose, causing it to burn up. I had checked the plug with my meter before plugging in (even though I have a SurgeGuard) and didn't detect that problem.

I've not encountered one that was 'miswired' in over 30 years of RVing but have run into several in various states of disrepair. Bad breakers, loose connections, low voltage, etc.

I have only encountered one "miswired" in 17 years. The neutral was switched and the Progressive Ind. EMS would not turn on the power to the coach. It gave the message on the display indicating the problem. The switched wiring was corrected immediately by the campgrounds.
Now low voltage in some of the older CG is a different subject.

One thing I watch is the condition of the receptical. If is is smoked or burnt on the face plate, I will not hook up. I carry a small pocket V-O-M and check the plug for power.

We were at a campground and a womans dogs would not get into her trailer. When my husband checked it, the trailer was "hot" the box and ground were miswired. At another campground when we plugged into the new box, it blew the side out of the box. We have a surgeguard. In that one water had gotten into the electrical wiring.

We recently returned from a west coast trip (6,750 miles in 36 days). We have a progressive EMS system and found one CG with reversed polarity and two with periodic low voltage. Based on TV news and CG owner all of Minnesota is having a real power problem. Not enough grid to support the demand. We were registering 104 to 105 volts and 104 is the EMS cut off.

Has anyone ever used a jewelers file or thin emery board between the contacts on a pedestal?
When I replaced my broken 3020 amp breaker the other day I also used a Dremel tool with a wire brush to clean and polish my 30amp exterior plug.
I always turn off the pedestale before pluging in but it was still pitted and scummy after 2 years.
One flat spade blade had a melted area in the rubber from overheating and arching somewhere along our travels.
I know these pedestale are probably never checked unless someone complains and since so many people are electrically challenged it goes un-noticed.
How about some dieelectric grease periodically?
Might that help?
