I looked into registering our new motorhome in AZ a few years ago. It was over $3000 annually. We have a home there and do register three vehicles there. However our legal residence is WI which is where we register the MH for less than $150/ year.

Huh? If your legal residence is WI, why register your vehicles in AZ ???

As Wisconsin-ites who have changed their legal residence to AZ, while the annual VLT (Vehicle License Tax) can be high -- especially on new vehicles -- there is a tad bit of difference between AZ & WI state taxes:
AZ state taxes: 2.59 to 4.54%
WI state taxes: 4.6 to 7.75%

To compute AZ VLT (Excel makes it a lot easier):

- Take the original new MRSP and decrement this amount by 16.25% per year to the current year.

- Take 60% of that amount. Then divide it by 100

- Finally, multiply the remaining value by $2.89. That's your VLT tax.

It's killer on new vehicles, but on old not so bad.

We have a home in AZ and live there about 5 1/2 month and in WI 6 1/2. We have a car, modified Jeep, RZR and pickup there that stay there and insured there. Both my enclosed and open trailers are also registered there. Most were bought used from private parties, hence no sales tax. Our motorhome and two vehicles that stay in WI are registered there. Another modified Jeep that we haul with us is also registered in AZ. Because of the tires and other mods, the Jeeps and RZR are not street legal in WI but are in AZ. It's a no brainer.

Any AZ residents out there that can help?

Scott, when I purchased my '04 Meridian in October, 2003 the tax and license cost was $7,492.62!! Purchased in Texas, registered in my home state of Arizona.

Second year license cost was $2,542.06.
The cost has decreased each year according to a formula that I don't quite understand.
This year the license cost was $520.91

(Can't wait for October to find this year cost)

I recently bought a 07 Fleetwood Discovery 39S in AZ and the prior owner paid $910. It is only going to be $154 in PA. CO has a similar tax structure of taxing you based on MSRP and having high rates for 10 years even if it is used. Both seem quite steep for a vehicle you only use a few times a year.

Who uses it only a few times a year? In AZ at least we use it year round (02 Journey, 185,000 miles).

I'm not retired yet so I can only use it on vacation time :( As soon as I retire, me and the Mrs are going to load up the dogs and visit all the national parks.

Sounds like a great plan! We have done it for the last 13 years and plan to keep doing it as long as the health holds out.

Safe travels.
