I'm considering buying a 2004 Holiday Rambler on a Workhorse chassis and have a question about the auto brake system: When the brake is released, there is a fairly loud noise. Is this normal?

No. At least not as far as I recall. Can you describe the 'loud noise' a little better? Squeal? Bang? Wrenching noise? Squeaks?

My autopark on my 96 Georgie Boy doesn't make any noise. Do some research on Workhorse chassis. In the late 90's chevy sold out to Workhorse and they had some chassis issues. Then I believe Freightliner bought them out and then they went out of bussiness. Newer motorhomes are v10 Fords. Like Jim said check on line and it explains the different versions of the autopark brake.

Question!! are you sure it's the auto brake?
And not the Emergency brake?

My auto brake disengages only when I take it out of park and it does not make any noise when I do this.

But when I release the parking break it make a loud bang.

Just a thought.

Auto Park Brake automatically engages / disengages when you place the transmission in / out of park. It should make no noise.

Do you know WHICH model workhorse chassis? Does it have a yellow knob that is pushed to release the parking brake? If you get me the last 8 digits of the chassis vin # I can provide better detailed info on that specific chassis. ED

Terry Walter: You don't say what chassis you have, but "generally" you don't have BOTH. If you have an Auto Apply Parking Brake (AAPB) you don't also have a manually applied Parking Brake (PB). If you have both, please tell us "more". Thanks,

The J71 Auto Park Brake on the P32 chassis does have a yellow push pull knob, but it is generally engaged/disengaged by taking out and putting it in the park position on your shift lever. When you take the RV out of park you should hear the hydraulic pump run for a moment but that is it. When you put back in park you shouldn't hear anything.

This is for Thread #8 (Edgray)I have a 1997 36' Dolphin M.H. on a Chevy P-30 chassis with the 7000 454 engine.
The breaking system consist of a parking break which is connected to the drum on the drive shaft.

The Elect. break backs up the parking break.(because the M.H. is too heavy for the tranmission parking pin to hold it, there for it does not have one).

You can still use the parking break when you stop but when you put your shifting lever in park the Elect. break applys it self.
My breaks went out on me two times so I know that you can use the parking break if you have to slow down or even stop, the only way the Elect. break will work is if you stop and put the shiffter lever in park.
I must of replaced at least a half of the parts one time or another in the Elect. Break set up.

All in all it a great breaking system when it works.

I also have the Workhorse chassis. When going from Park to Drive, the pump will make a whine (pretty loud) when it engages. That means it is holding pressure. Oldusedbear is a wonderful gentleman. He walked me through my brake problem.
