Awning opens while driving
N our way to Arizona a couple weeks ago the wind was blowing on the passengers side of my HR Ambassador with an electric awning. The awning made a noise and in a split second was on my roof and the fabric ripped and the awning arms were hanging out the side about 13' from the body at 60 MPH. I have now found out that the electric awning motor has a brake within it and it needs a motor, and a 20' awning fabric. I have a 7 year full warranty that told me to call my insurance company. I feel the warranty company needs to pay this claim, anyone else agree?

No, it's up to your vehicle insurance company not the service policy (it's not a "warranty" no matter what they call it).

If the motor had not crapped out the brake would not have ever come open. That is where the problem came from and that is a machanical problem which is what they cover. The wind cam not get under the awning as it has a metal cover over the awning.

I've had two awning blown off in storms but we were camped. My insurance company took care of both of them.

Sorry to disagree but the wind gets under the awning from the ends too and will extend the metal covered awnings as well at just the right angle and with sufficient force including vehicle's speed.
RV Innovations sells a very good awning securing "gadget". Takes about 30 minutes to install. Just securing the arms WILL NOT prevent awning unfurling.

Agree - the wind can easily get under the metal cover and strip it off. Happened to me in a snowstorm in Montana, and it wasn't even a powered awning. Those brakes can handle only so much wind pressure.
Call your insurer - it is wind damage, not a mechanical failure.

I was following a 5er and the awning started to deploy, I passed them and pulled them over. When all was finally understood, they had thrown the remote in the glove compartment (remote had awning and door lock) and something pressed the button to extend the awning while they were driving at hwy speed.

The metal cover has no effect on wind not getting under the cover.
Wind can get under the metal on a electric or manual awning's.
It happens a lot, more often to the manual ones.
Even rain gets under the metal cover. Metal cover is just a $$$ feel good.
It does very little for the $$$ spent to protect the awning.

The metal covers protect the first 6" to foot of the fabric from the elements when rolled up.
Looks a whole lot better too. I have it on all my awnings including slide out covers.

I agree, I also have metal covers on all of my awnings. It prevents the awnings from deteriorating in the sun.
I have a Weather Pro Electric awning and have never had the wind pull it out and I have been in some very strong winds.

Just picked my MH up from the repair shop today for the same issue. My insurance is the one who paid the claim. Most warranties cover the part that failed but not always the damage caused by that part failing.
