Brrrr ... it's starting to get cold outside with our first real winter blast. Current Temperatures:
- Outside: 17.1 Degrees.
- Pass. Rear Basement: 36.8 Degrees
- Plumbing Bay: 46.7 Degrees
- Inside: 67.8
While it's not short sleeve weather inside, we're all keeping pretty warm inside. This isn't our first winter staying inside an RV, but it is our first winter inside our National RV Sea Breeze. We've taken a few steps to help winterize that have really made a difference.
To help keep the interior at a moderate temperature we're using a Kenwood Oil-Filled Radiator that's usually set around 68-70 degrees. We keep this in the middle of our RV across from our entrance door, and it really does a good job at keeping the living space at a decent temperature. We also have an electric heater in the plumbing bay with an automatic temperature sensor so that its not running 24/7.
When it started to get cold last month, I went to Home Depot and bought a roll of
reflective insulation . The windows on our Sea Breeze are only single pane, and as such, we get a lot of radiated cold coming from the glass. We spent about an hour cutting and measuring the insulation to fit 2 windows in the living space, the window in the door, window in the bedroom and also a piece cut out to cover the stairwell, and it's really amazing how much it helps! Using a point and shoot thermometer, there's an average of a 9 degree difference when the insulation is added to a window.
I also spent some time using some of the scrap pieces lining them up under/along the base of the dashboard to help eliminate the draft from radiated cold. Another thing that really helped in the cockpit area was cutting a piece out and wrapping the metal seat base/columns for both the driver and passenger seats. It's incredible how much cold air is radiated from them.
We haven't yet cut out the insulation to cover the front windshield and driver/passenger side windows ... but if it gets much colder, we just might. I'm sure that with them covered we can raise the temperature a bit more, but its so dark in the motorhome now with the rest of the windows covered that we really don't want to cut off all our light.
So far it's the coldest day of our winter season. The Farmers Almanac says that we should see above normal temps with a wet winter season. I'll take that over what we experienced last year! Last year we had to call the farmer down the road to unbury our driveway.
