Just a photo I found , not a filter(screw on), but part of a fuel separator I would guess........diesel fuel bacteria at it best though..........

I have finally finished fighting an algae problem with the '03 350ISC bought about a year ago in PA that had been sitting for several months.

It took several primary and secondary filter changes and regular Biobor treatments.

There were visible black specs in the water bowl. I could also see the black specs lining the upper walls of the tank from both sides of the fuel filler necks with a flashlight.

Smitty 77....Save your fuel filter and at first chance cut the head off like you would a snake (about a 1\4 inch down where it screws in) ( put it in a vise and grab a hack saw) and pull your filter for a look see. Hopefully its clean. Doesn't surprise me that hydro-hot would smoke. The thing was choking from all the unused fuel.

Any chance the pump up front was a offroad diesel pump, it is dyed red. Topping off with it on accident would change the color of the fuel and make it darker as described. Probably not but who knows.

either way glad its working ok for you now.
