Banning, Ca San Gorgonio Pass - Crazy wind?
Hi All,
We're sitting in Ontario, CA wanting to go to Palm Springs, with confirmed reservations, etc.
Boy, is it blowing here in Ontario! (11 am Thur Mar 12) Maybe 20 mph with gusts to 40.
Is there anyone who knows the San Gorgonio Pass down into Palm Springs, or how to get the pass conditions?
We've got a 30 foot Class A... We've been blown around a little going past all the windmills, but today - I don't know...
Thanks for any advice.

I will usually check the Intellicast website when driving out of the Los Angelus metro area.
They show a color coded map indicating the wind speed throughout the country, (and your route), if you zoom in.
Currently, the winds look strong between Ontario and Moreno Valley where they die down, then it picks up again in Cabezon until you reach Palm Springs.
Just as in sailing, (nothing but a floating RV), the winds are usually at their calmest at Dusk and Dawn.

We are expecting the Santa Ana winds over the next few days. This time of year you will find that particular area windy in general, but when the Santa Ana winds kick up it's a little worse.
If the winds are high in the Palm Springs/Cabezon area I personally wouldn't drive through there unless I had too, when the sand storms kick up they will sandblast your MH.

Weather reports show winds at 9 mph and nothing on gusts. Not a particularly windy day here in the Inland Empire. I would just slow down and stay in the slow lanes. I'm try to avoid the 10, I go the inland route 247 when I can.

My rule of thumb is: It's always windy thru Banning, however the wind will be at your back going East.

Fred: the winds often come out of the deserts toward the coast, east to west, through the narrowing mountain passes they accelerate. The Santa Ana's are the most fierce some, east to west.

That area is Always windy, which is probably why they put all those windmills in the pass. 30 to 40mph gusts really represent moderate wind as 60mph gusts are not that uncommon. I have found over the years that dropping my speed significantly helps with steering control and comfort. Driving the Palmdale highway in wind I have been known to drop down to 40mph just for comfort. When we were up that way in January for the FMCA it blew pretty hard, and again 50mph seemed like a comfortable speed.

You are right, I had my brain locked into non-Santa Ana conditions.

I prefer the 10 over going through the Bad Lands on the 60. Either way the Santa Ana's can be strong at times.

After staying one night in Banning and being blow going east the next day I told my wife we are banning staying or going through Banning.
I now know how it got it's name....
