Where is the solenoid usually located? How far is it away from the actual switch?

In the Monaco line they are often in the compartment below the drivers side. Open the panel where all the fuse are and you should be able to find it. The switch is near the door so you can reach it from outside as you are leaving or entering.

In my 1995 Dynasty, the solenoid is found in the engine compartment room underneath the bed on the passenger side.
