DO NOT ADD WATER until DONE!

Water expands when charging and may spill

don't see it would hurt... most manufacturers recommend to run equalizing monthly. it basically brings the sulfate left on lead plates back into sulfuric acid state. as only your inverter does equalizing in controlled mode, it's safe.

Battery equalization

If your buddy's '05 Excursion is equipped like my '05 Providence, which I suspect it is, his stock Xantrex has no equalization mode available unless he upgrades.

Which manufacturers recommend equalizing monthly?
That would only serve to shorten their service life.
Why not use a hydrometer first to determine whether equalization is needed?

That's what we're thinking. There is a phone plug looking port that I think is for a remote panel that would allow for controlling the equalization mode. He doesn't have the remote panel.

i stand corrected. i just reread the trojan documents, it says "Trojan recommends equalizing only when fully charged batteries have a low specific gravity reading below 1.230, or wide ranging specific gravity 0.050 between the battery’s cells".

my solar controller came with default equalization interval to monthly. i was mistaken into thinking all batteries should do that. i will reconfig the setting to manual. thanks.

(in this thread, a couple people were doing monthly eq cycle too http://www.solarpaneltalk.com/showth...g-of-batteries).

You got it.

Yes many do, not realizing the harm they are doing to the batteries.
Several chargers/inverter models have the automatic equalization function and they are under the belief that it should be done on a regular basis.

US battery does recommend monthly equalizations on their deep cycle batteries. U.S. Battery | How To Equalize Charge And Prevent Stratification On Deep-Cycle Batteries - U.S. Battery

Interstate (depending on which tech bulletin you read) recommends monthly or bi-monthly equalizations. Interstate Batteries FAQ :: How do I charge certain deep cycle 6-volt and 12-volt batteries?

Trojan recommends depending on which tech bulletin you read either when the specific gravity between cells indicates it, or two to three times per year or in the attached video (from their Director of Quality Assurance) monthly. Trojan Tips 5 - Equalization is Key to Extending Battery Life and Performance - YouTube

GA Navigator,

Doesn't your friend have one of these inside his rig? It's the remote panel.

I saw nothing in any of the links that stated equalizing should be done on a monthly basis.
Batteries do not stratify/sulfate unless they are allowed to drop below 50% SOC.
Maintaining the charge is the key to preventing the need to equalize.
Its much easier to eliminate the problem than to contiunualy have to fix it.
Equalization is the controlled frying of a battery and will greatly reduce its service life. Do as you wish.
