Battery explosion

my 2 yr old house deep cycle battery (interstate) exploded in the middle of the night. I had checked fluid just 3 weeks prior and it was OK. 2nd house battery is fine. scary stuff. what if this happened when I was inspecting it? anybody have this problem??

When you say exploded, do you mean pieces all over the battery compartment or just the case split? If it's not vented or vents blocked, it could build up pressure, especially if subjected to a fast charging rate. Check the voltage of your charger to see if it exceeds 15 v or so.

Check voltage carefully and if more than 14 leave shore line unplugged.

Take some photos and contact the manufacturer for direction before you do anything if warranty is still in place.

If not...

Get a water hose and flush the area well.

Do it again.

Get safety classes and rubber gloves and disconnect all wires and then get it out.

Flush the area again.

Check other battery with hydrometer and verify charging system.

I had a battery explode several years ago. Its Hydrogen / oxygen gas builds up internally and then a plate or external spark ignites it. Sounds like a 38 cal pistol going off.

Check voltage to make sure your not over charging. Check and make sure the battery compartment is well ventilated.

I had one blow up in a car with the hood up when the starter engaged. Makes a lasting impression!

Make sure all connections are tight. It takes a spark to ignite the gas. This is why they tell you to hook the neg. cable to the engine when jump starting a car. When you remove the neg. cable if there is a spark it's away from the batt.

I had one explode in my golf cart while driving it. Dealer thought is was a cell that shorted out. That is a scary feeling when you are sitting on top of it when it explodes.
Batteries are made by humans and subject to failure. I guess it is a good reason to wear safety glasses when servicing the batteries.
