Battery Question

I've got a 38 ft. diesel pusher with 4 house and 2 coach batteries. When I measure the voltage on the 2, which are hooked together, it is the same as when I measure them individually (12 volts).. When I measure the voltage on the 4 by touching the positive on the first and the negative on the last I get 12vDC. Doing it individually gives 6vDC. Shouldn't the voltage of the connected series be a multiple of the individuals ?
I know next to nothing about electricity. What am I missing here ?

Looks like you have 4 6 volt batteries which if 2 are hooked up in series will give you 12 volts then the two sets hooked up parallel will give you 12 volts but checked individually only 6 volts.

Like batteries you put in a flashlight, stacked neg to positive sums two batteries voltage and their output is 3 volts. Each measured separately gives about 1.5 volts

Your 12 volt coach batteries are connected in parallel, + to + and - to - giving you the 12 volts you are measuring. Your six volt house batteries are a combination of series and parallel wiring. Each pair of six volt batteries are wired in series effectively giving you two 12 volt batteries. These two sixes which give you 12 are then connected in parallel giving you the 12 volts your meter shows. Refer to some basic battery wiring schematics to better understand it.

It looks like Rocky beat us to it with his video post.
