After getting way to little time out of a set of four six volt batteries I finally learned.

Now, when I store for long lengths of time I remove them and connect to a BatteryMinder to keep them charged. My old method was to run to the MH every three weeks or so and run the generator to charge the batteries. My experience with BatteryMinder has proven to me how long it take to get a full charge on batteries and using the generator is not the best method. I still run the generator, but for the generators sake not the batteries.

I also installed a Profil watering system to make adding distilled water an easy painless thing to do. As a result I no longer think of it and say "well tomorrow".

I tried mineral oil but found it really just made me less apt to look at my batteries thinking it would ward off drying.

I'm just human I suspect many other people on this forum are as well. So my solutions are to make battery maintenance easy and less likely to be neglected as a result.

Haven't done it to my batteries yet but have the mineral oil at the ready for when I pull my batteries out to service them.
i am using mineral oil and it works great. indeed terminals are clean and less water is evaporated. you can see before and after are so different.

I can agree that mineral oil works but it is not the panacea; batteries still need to be checked and filled regularly. The formula as I recall was 2oz per cell for 12v and 4oz per cell for 6v.

After trying both I concluded making checking and filling water easy was the best solution for me. I need some more experience to see if corrosion is any less with the Profil system, perhaps not. So far so good, however.
