Best Route South from 81 to 95
Hi folks:
I can't remember the cross over route from 81S to 95S. The connection was below DC and consisted of 2 routes I believe. 66 and something? Can't recall.
I'm leaving MA 1 December for AZ. Would love to stay on 81S but am leary of storms in Virginia and the Smokies.
Appreciate input.

I66 runs you into the DC beltway where you can pickup I95. Further southwest I64 runs into the Richmond beltway where you can pickup I95.
I know you didn’t ask this, but I would watch the weather & just stay on I81 if possible. It’s not mountainous and in early December there is more mild weather than bad weather. The odds are in your favor.

I guess I don't understand your question. If you are coming from Massachusetts, how are you getting to I-80? If you are heading for Arizona, why would you want to come back to I-95?
From Massachusetts, I'd use I-84 to cross Connecticut, NY, into Pennsylvania. If weather forecasts permit, I'd go south on I-80 to I-40 west. If weather conditions are bad, shelter in place where you are until roads are cleared.

The other connection would be I64 into Richmond VA.
If the weather is a problem along I81 in Virginia then I95 can be worse with the heavier local traffic once the front moves east. Northeastern Virginia roads will turn into long term parking if the weather turns bad. I95 from Baltimore south to Fredericksburg will be jammed so I66 might not be the best route.
There's actually no easy solution for bad winter weather other than staying north of the Mason-Dixon line and keep driving into the setting sun. At least up north the road crews are more plentiful and drivers a little bit more experienced with the white stuff when it falls from the sky. Down here in Southeastern Virginia schools will close if there's snow in the forecast and not actually falling.

I-66 will take you to I-81 from Washington as I-66 connects to the Washington beltway (I-495).
However if you want to avoid the traffic that is so prevalent near Baltimore and Washington. Take I-78 off of I-95 near Newark NJ. I-78 will take you to I-81.
Alternative, take I-95 to the Pennsylvania Tpke. and pick up I-81 just outside Harrisburg.
Keep an ear out for weather reports and if a bad storm is forecasted, shelter in place. Interstates are usually opened very fast so you won't have a big delay.

I do the I81 to I95 connection many times in Feb where we are watching Wx.
I'm confused as others re your comment about heading to AZ?
How far S are you planning before heading W?...it makes a difference at least in my opinion.

You would probably have a higher chance of hitting winter conditions north of VA and TN in December. Watch the weather, get through quick and be on your way. Safe travels.

That's the way I go. I assume you are trying to reach route 10 west.

CT. here and we have made the trip to AZ. in the past. Not sure where in MA. you are but we take 84 to 81. That gets you to TN. We see the first day as the oh **** day. After day 1 or driving 500 miles the possibility of snow is not as likely.
81 drops into Knoxville, at that point you can head west towards Nashville or drop down closer to the Gulf.
If we see that snow is likely we leave early.

I believe you were referencing I81 to I66 east to US17 south, although unless you had a reason to run I95 it is not the shortest route to AZ

I live near Roanoke Va and if you're going to Az why not stay on I-81 all the way to it merges into I-40? I-81 does not go through the mountains and you will have very little chance of snow.
