Bike Rack question
We just bought our new toad, 2012 Versa. Now, I have to figure out how to bring our bikes with us, four bikes in all: 2 adult & 2 children. I figure we have two options. I can buy a hitch for the Versa, however they only make class I hitches for the Versa, and i'm not overly impressed on how they mount to the car.
Secondly, I figure I could buy the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter, 4" Drop/Rise which would allow me to use the hitch on my MH for the toad as well as my bike rack. Any thoughts?

Look on the net at Camping World. They have a pretty good selection. I use one where the rack slides over the hitch. Works just fine.

I should have said this earlier, but I already have a four bike bike rack (say that ten times fast) that slides into either a 2" or 1.25" reciever. I really don't want to buy a new bike rack just the equipment to carry it.

I use the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter RM-077-4. It is a 2" or 4" Drop/Rise with a 5 bike rack. I needed the drop to align the tow bar anyway. Due to scrapping the pavement pulling out of my subdivision I added a wheel to the bottom of the drop. I still scrape sometimes but I don't rip up the pavement.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

As I write this I'm sitting in Nova Scotia. The bikes are on the rack and have followed us around without incident for 40,000 miles since I posted the above. If only I could find a rack that would make me ride the bikes more often I'd really be happy.
I'm a big fan of Blue Ox... although this model only holds three bikes and may not fit your needs.

With 5 bikes do you ever worry about taking a sharp turn and one of bikes hitting your toad?

Since we never leave our toad at home, I installed a hitch on the toad. It is easier and more room to carry the bikes on the toad.

Yeah, I totally agree, but would you put a bike rack and 4 bikes on a class I hitch? That is my big questions.

That's a good question. One of the bikes mounts between the rack and MH, we don't usually carry one there. The others are mounted higher than the HHR hood, I think. We are going to the coast Sunday. I will load everything up Saterday and verify there is no interference. Thanks

Not in a hundred years! We just put a class 1 on our CRV. The bike rack has to clear the CRV's spare, so it protrudes a little more than some, but 2 bikes is all I would ever want to put on it - even though they are fairly lightweight bikes. I can't imagine putting 2 more on it... -Al

We have used a class 1 for four or five bikes, (according to how many grandkids are with us) for ten years, with no problems.

Recommend the Roadmaster drop/riser hitch. I have hauled four bikes on a class one receiver for a number of years. The bikes are high enough with the Yakama rack to clear the toad hood. I do have to be careful with the front bike touching the motor home skin. I used a standard 3 inch drop hitch and then welded another 2 inch receiver with a 2 inch rise on top. Works like a charm. Cost me $10 to do the mod. Careful, requires a certified weld in that location. If you choose to use a ball hitch for the toad, then the hitch pictured above looks like a winner.
