Blowing breakers on Winnebago

2003 Winnebago Journey DL. The other night, we were staying in the motorhome, genset running, air conditioner on. Middle of night, both stopped. Genset now will run, but as soon as a load is applied, it stops with 3-1 "overspeed" code. Also, when we now plug into shore power, breaker on shore power trips immediately. Tried a couple different shore power sockets, 50A and 20a, and both blow immediately. Sounds like a short somewhere in the 110V system very near the power entry. Had genset checked out and they separated it totally from the coach system and applied a load and it still shut down with code 3-1.
So I'm confused. Thought air conditioner might have failed, causing overload on genset at 3am. Which might have damaged something in genset? But ac generally takes a minute after turning on to require power and fire up. Breakers are blowing on shore power faster than that.
Any clues anyone? We are about to move into the coach for 3 months in Florida and need power figured out. Can't get appointment with RV shop for 2 months.

Wow. Sorry to hear of your trouble. First and foremost I'd recommend getting an RV repair person who is experienced with electrical repairs. Not sure where you are, but maybe a mobile person can come out.

Barring that, it does sound like something failed near the source. Do you have an Auto Transfer Switch? They can cause problems, loose wires, fried connections, etc.

If it were me, I would start by flipping off all breakers, including the main feed, and see if the shore breaker still trips. That will tell you if the problem is in the RV somewhere or part of the main feed. If it doesn't trip, you can then try flipping on 1 breaker at a time to see what causes it to trip. What other components do you have installed? Surge protector? Voltage booster? Anything else?

But above all else, be careful. If you're not experienced working around electricity, get a professional before you start tearing into things.

Sounds like the auto transfer switch. That should be about the only place where the incoming shore power and the generator are together. I would get a mobile tech to come out and check it. Most any campground has a card or something to point you to a good tech. I say campground as he will need 50 amps in order to check his work.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

Wish I could help. Definitely not the time for A/C's to quit!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Thanks for replies, guys. Turns out that the RV doesn't play well with GFI outlets. Since I own the outlet, temp power pole and breaker, I swapped out the 50a GFI for a regular one, and now everything works fine.
