Brakes

I'm baaaaaccckkkk, 89 pace arrow jd chassis. I think my brake fluid boiled. Everything was peachy, then BAM brakes went away. Pads new calipers new.
Is this even possible? Thanks ahead of time

When the brake parts were replaced, was the fluid changed also? Brake fluid is one of those items that people often 'over look' as a maintenance item. Sure they may check to ensure that there is plenty of fluid but that it the extent of it. Hydraulic brake fluid does break down/no bad and needs to be replaced about every 7-10 years depending on the type of driving one does. What about the brake booster, it might also be going bad.

Brake fluid should be replaced every 2-3 years, especially on vehicles not driven regularly. The fluid absorbs water and that lowers the boiling point. That said, it takes heavy use of brakes or a dragging brake to create enough heat to boil the fluid. You didn't say what may have caused your "bam" event.

Did the brake pedal go to the floor or did the pedal give resistance but no braking power??? Makes a big difference.

If the pedal was firm but no braking power then the boost system failed. If the pedal went to the floor but pressure returned when the brakes cooled, then flush the system with fresh fluid. If the brakes were not hot when the brakes failed or pedal pressure did not return then it is most likely a bad master cylinder.

If you have new calipers, there is a good chance you bleed out the old fluid, so I would lean towards a leak or bad master cylinder.


As mentioned, a hard brake pedal, could be a booster problem.


A loose wheel bearing can push the caliper in while driving and cause the pedal to go down the first time you hit the brakes, but should pump up, on the second stroke.
