Bridge Weight limit
OK, so there is a bridge with a sign "Weight Limit - Tandem Axle 12500lbs". No other information. How does this translate if you only have a single axle?

Might be a question to ask the state DOT, or the county where the bridge is located.
I don't think it could be much more confusing .

To be on the safe side I use 2/3 of the tandem weight rating for a single axle. In your case .66X12500= 8,250 or 16,500 for total truck/rv. Towed spreads its weight over two more axels so no problem.
If the single axel number is listed you may get a few more lbs.
If some one knows more info please let me know.
I am not too old to learn.

The one thing that I am absolutely certain of is that my son should not take his new Newell weighing in at 57,000#, over that bridge!!!

is this a real world example, or something you're just tossing out?
a pic of the sign would be best, along with the 'bridge'/area, if there's one nearby

Bridge is actually on the road to the RV sites at Tyler State Park.
Ok. I'm not good at posting pictures... Figured it out...

The only tandem axle that light would have to be on a gasser like a 98 Pace Arrow Vision I had. Any DP tandem will be at least twice that amount.

According to the U.S. Dept of Transportation definition:
Tandem-Axle Weight — The total weight on two or more consecutive axles whose centers are spaced more than 40 inches apart but not more than 96 inches apart.
So, I would guess that if my MH has only two axles (Bounder 33C) and they're more than 96" apart, the tandem weight limit would not apply. Of course I could be wrong and have a new bridge named after me.

That really cleared it up for me. LOL
I'd pull over to the side of the road for a smoke break and watch what went across the bridge. If units larger than mine made it across I'd proceed across it.

I must admit that I have yet to see anything that clears this one up for me. However, with my axle ratings (not current weights) of 16,000 lbs front, 22,000 lbs drive and 13,300 lbs tag, the only thing I have to understand is stay away.

If you're going fast enough the bridge won't have enough time to collapse.

Tandem axle (not Tag axle) I believe is referring to two rear drive axles...

Bridge Weight limit
Bridges don't really care about tag axles or not, they care about how far the weight is being distributed. Far enough apart, it doesn't matter. Too close, Ahhhhhhhh. So, for most class A-s, you are probably ok if your front axle weight is less than the 12500 and the combined weights of your tag and drive axle weights are less than 12500. At least, that is how I would read it. Being a weanie myself, I would find a different way if I had anything but an empty Rv.
