Buying a used RV

I'm planning on buying a used, class A, diesel pusher and would like to hear your opinion on buying from an individual vs. a dealer. Pro and Con.
If it makes a difference, I intend to buy a Fleetwood Discovery 40g, 2011-2013.

Welcome to iRV2.

If you are a first time buyer with cash , and no trade , purchasing from an individual would be an option . BUT ! depending where you find the unit you're looking at , all the usual SCAM alerts must apply.

If you go to the " Files " drop box , in the blue bar and download the " Buyers Check List " to take with you when your looking.

No matter where you buy , getting service records is paramount.

If you know someone that has owned a MH before, take them along to look at it. Like the post above, service records are good if they have them. I have purchased from individuals and dealers. I have owned 7 MH's and both have worked out, but, I knew the individuals that I purchased from. Some dealers will fix things that show up in the first few weeks. The dealer you buy from makes a big difference too.

Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

I would prefer buying from an individual if at all possible!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

As a rule you can usually do better buying from an individual. Be careful not to do anything online and never send money to the seller without seeing the MH.
Too many scams out there.

Good luck with your search.

Where is the blue bar to find the drop box?

The " Blue Bar" is under your welcome message, and runs from " User CP" on the left , to " Log Out "on the right.

BTW; Welcome to iRV2.

Thanks everyone for the advice so far. I'm definitely leaning towards buying from a person. The dealer is saying they have no service records and don't know the history of the RV which is scaring me off.

Are you using a computer or a smart phone to access the site?

On a computer screen , across the top of every page is, a picture of the iRV2 Rally in Nashville. Starting in the top right corner and moving down, you'll see your " Welcome Larry Mac01 " under that in the dark blue bar; that runs side to side on the page; , the words " Log Out" go to the left in that dark blue bar till you get to the " Files " and click on that word for the drop box to open . Then on the next screen , click " Buyers Guide" to down load the pdf so you can print it out at home.
I've never used a smart phone to access iRV2, so if that's what your doing , I'm sorry I can't be of any help.

Depending on where you plan on registering it, you may not have to pay taxes on the purchase if you buy from a private party. In my case, I purchased a 2007 Expedition at an auction but the the title was transferred from the previous owner directly to me which saved me several thousands in sales tax.

Use the dealer lot to look and compare various models and floorplans.

Buy from the guy that owns, has driven and maintained the MH. Always go to the owners location after they have provided good quality pictures. If they don't want to provide pictures and they won't provide contact information, walk away as there are plenty of MH's around.

If you are familiar with MH's, there is no reason you can't inspect it yourself. Use the Buyers Guide on this site as others have posted. You can hire an inspector.

I have purchased several used MH's in the past and all have been purchased from the owner. That includes my current Newmar DSDP which has been a great and very powerful coach.

Welcome to the forum.
