CA smog certificates for gassers

What a frustrating wasted day. I drove 40 miles to the smog check place I went to 2 years ago only to find that the "new" smog testing equipment being installed in many places cannot test a vehicle over 14,000 lbs. Now I will have to go to another location, also 40 miles away, next week that still has the old equipment.

If you have a gasser make sure you call ahead first and see if they have the old smog equipment and save yourself the same frustration.

Which begs the question, what are we supposed to do in the future when they all switch over to the new equipment?

I was talking to they guy who does all our cars, and he told me it will be no issue as they can do the newer MH's via the OBD just like they do the cars now. He told me they will just wheel the equipment out to the MH. Ours is not due for a few years yet so I guess I'll have to wait and see if it works.

So.....I suppose the lawmakers and laws that YOU voted for are the ONLY ones in effect in your state?

Please do that. I did speak to a BAR Technical Specialist about this yesterday but he was not very helpful. I would be very interested in what your son says.

We had ours tested back in January - they pulled the motorhome up close to the bay and rolled the computer out to the RV. There were no issues at all - if your place is trying to put your motorhome on the dyno then they're doing it wrong...

Thanks for the comment, but I never mentioned anything about dynos. The problem is the new computer analysis systems many smog places are installing. These newer systems will not test a vehicle over 14,000 lbs. The first place I went to only had the new system and he was unable to do the test. I had to phone around to find another that still has the old computer.

Obviously the place you went to still had the older smog analysis system installed.

I realize that they do not dyno motorhomes--most facilities don't even have the headroom to be able to pull into a bay anyway.

Did they put the probe in the exhaust or just connect to the OBD II port?

They put the probe into the exhaust - I don't recall seeing them looking for the OBDII port so I can't say if they used it or not. The last time we had it done, at a different shop, they didn't use the OBDII port - they got the engine RPM readings using a clamp-on connector to a spark plug.

I've used the same tester for several years and always used the OBDII port.
