Camping at Assateaque Island National Seashore
Hi all. We are thinking of going to subject area next year and was wondering if anyone had been there and is it ok for a 38 ft. class A MH? DW wants to see horses in the wild. I am ok to see them on tv. There will be 3 of us traveling together each with a 38 footer. Any suggestions or thoughts on staying on seashore? Thanks in advance for your ideas. CP

We stayed about 5 miles away in a Castaways campground. You can’t interact with the horses and if they are in your campsite you can’t shoo them away but must wait until they move on their own. Also didn’t want to risk sand on my jacks. We did go to the National Park a couple of times and enjoyed our visits, then returned to enjoy our pool and other amenities of where we were staying.

Been there three times and will be again, next week.
There is a State and a Federal park out there. I had a 30 ft MH in the Fed park and don't remember any length issues.
Lots of room on the Bay side. One loop is generator free.
The sites close to the dunes, on the ocean side, were partially sand filled but we fit fine. The other sites seemed long enough.
The horses, actually Ponys, walked right thru the camp site. Some tent campers left their junk food out while eating at the table. The horses bullied in and took their stuff.
We also stayed at the State park. Nothing remarkable pops in my head about that stay. Open roof hot showers.
Always had a good time.
Both stays were dry camping. The state has some power but always booked.

Great running and biking in the park. If lounging or walking mosquitos are bad in summer when there is no wind.

Well worth doing, we camped there this past spring with our 35ft MH with toad at the Nat Park. We took the toad and drove down to Chincoteague Island to see the horses there and when we got back there 4-5 horses at our campsite !

Great place. We used to go there every spring before the campgrounds officially opened. You could stay for free and had the place to yourself. That was a few years ago so can't guarantee that they still allow free off season camping.

We've been there every year for the past 10 years or so in our 30-foot Class C. Now we have a 36-foot Class A, and I'm sure there will be no problem. I highly recommend the Maryland State Park, since they have electricity in some of the loops. We stay in the state park camp ground and bike into the national park for free.
My wife loves seeing the ponies again and again, but somehow we also see something new every year. One year it was deer; another year it was a fox. We've also seen nearly newborn ponies. Last year it was a big, beautiful Entegra!
Of course, there's also the beach, which is beautiful and not crowded.
Thanks,
MathComp

We took our 37’ into the Bay Side of the Federal Park and had a wonderful time. The ponies walked right next to our coach several times. After checking all things out, the bay side of the federal park was the best choice for us. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Here's an excellent write up on staying there in a big RV and things to do:

If horses in your camp site is what you want, then Assateaque is the place to camp. We stayed in the Maryland State Park campground and they came strolling in one morning. The dog didn't know what to think.
Plan ahead and get your reservation in as soon as the window opens for the time period you want to be there. We were in Loop J with the rear of the coach facing the ocean. The breeze off the ocean kept the mid July daytime temps comfortable. Only a few sites with power and they get booked quickly.
And pack a shovel. When they decide it's time to go, they go. Doesn't matter much where they might be standing at that particular moment.

I also like the advise....bring a shovel. HA! Good idea!
Thanks so much for sharing that video and for the OP for posting that question. Definitely a MUST DO camping spot! Ocean AND horses...what else could you ask for?!

Messing around with the original post and some how dumped the video and can't upload it to the original posting. So, we'll do this a second time.
