Carefree Electric Awning on my Monaco will not close!

Hi all,

I had my awning open over the past few days because of the rain. Rain is gone and I started to close it today. As I closed it The awning went in to within a couple inches and I heard a pop. The awning flew all the way open and the canvas on top became very loose. I tried to bring it back in and the motor runs and nothing happens.

I wonder if the motor has disconnected from the roller? Any suggestion! I think I can take it off the motorhome with just two screws. Will see. It is late now and I will tackle this thing tomorrow.

The awning is on a 2008 Monaco Knight

Thanks.

Steve

I think I did not mention that the awning is over the front door.

I know first hand mine shot out going 65mph down the freeway. The motor which looks like a tube has a gear made of aluminum on the end and it stripped. Carefree came out with a better design motor assembly. There is two ways to install #1 remove awning and run the new wire all the way to switch or#2 remove just motor assembly and slice wire. After install it takes a little adjusting the travel in and out not a problem.

Not sure what you mean by the wire?

The power wire leaves the motor goes thru the side wall and to your in and out switch. If you don't remove the awning you have to cut the wire loose and splice the new motor to it. I took 2 extra large zip ties to hold my shut one on each end till I got home since I was on the freeway. Mine was held on by two large poop rivets. I you choose to remove make sure you can fish the new wire to switch.

The_Rooster explained exactly what happened. This same thing just happened to our OTD awning last weekend while at a campground. The reason for it happening is because of C of C crappy design. As stated above, they went to a different design in July, 2010 (of course, a few months after we got our rig!)
We hadn't used the OTD awning I would guess more than 20 times since we've had the rig when it broke. If I sound a bit unhappy with C of C, you bet! I also found out that they will not sell individual parts to a private owner.

They won't sell parts to me to fix? What a pain. Now I have to deal with a dealer. How easy are they to get? I assume I have older design since the rig was built in 2007. Will be able to use new deign?

How did you all fix yours? At dealer or home?

A&E VS Carefree

I was able to buy parts for my Oases directly from them. But if Carefree doesn't sell them I would give eBay a try.

You didn't say if the motor still runs. If it does it's a sure bet you sheared a drive gear or shaft somewhere.

See this thread: Oasis Door Awning will not retract

It may save you some headaches.

The motor still runs. I went out turned the roller and it does move. Sounds like a gear has gone.

The motor slide inside the awning tube, so the new design works on the old design. Instead of a gear grabbing another gear the new one grabs the roller tube itself. It's not a difficult repair I did mine myself.

This is the piece that broke on our OTD. The pink on the gear is glue, but didn't work so we made a new gear out of a 2" pot metal pulley. That also didn't last but was better than the original part that Carefree will not sell. They use a French made tube motor named ZUMI that is assembled in China I think, but all crap.

Dealer

Do you have any manuals for the awning? Got a model #?

There's a good chance that there's an exploded parts diagram 'somewhere' on the net. Even if it's not in the manual. Once you get a part number for the failed part(s) you will probably be able to find a dealer who either sells parts on the web or take the parts to your local shop and order through them.

If it's like the broken one in the previous post you should probably replace both parts. Looks like self lubricating plastic.

Whatever it costs it's still going to be cheaper than replacing the whole awning.
