I have a Hoover steam cleaner. I don't use any shampoo at all; just really hot water. (If there is a stain I use a spot clean.) In my experience, any shampoo residue in carpet seems to attract dirt faster and gets "gummy" feeling. So if you use a shampoo solution be sure to rinse sufficiently.

Like Don, I use box fans to help dry out the carpet. Our carpet is almost 7 years old and still looks nice.

I clean carpets for a living in my own company.

In my opinion, after 28 years, hot water extraction is the best method. Either do it yourself or hire someone.

I personally think Scotchgard is not necessary with today's newer materials but I'd be happy to charge to apply it if someone insists.

If you do apply Scotchgard yourself be sure the carpet is completely dry before applying it.

I get between 50 and 120 bucks depending on the size of the rig. I average 65 bucks for boats and vehicles.

I have mobile machine that heats the water but I need a source to fill it on location. If I know there will be no source for water I bring my own. An RV might require 3 - 5 gallons maybe more maybe less depending on size and dirt. I do need at least a 15 amp outlet but I am capable of using my own generator if need be. I can get places many truck mounted units can't.

Truck mounted units are self contained and use their own water, heat, and power.

Stanley Steamer came with a van with all the equipment they needed. I think they need a place to plug in but they did not need any water.

Much of our coach's "wood" paneling that contacts the carpet is made of plywood or pressboard covered in paper. When it gets wet, the paper lifts or wrinkles. We have had some damage from small leaks. Could the carpet-cleaning processes that use water cause similar damage?

Don't know what old fashioned standard solution is...

I have a regular residential carpet cleaning company come out using—high pressure steam and suction only—once a year.

Never, ever use soaps, cleaning foams, chemicals or whatever on carpet. It will ruin carpet and only attract more dirt.
