I'm looking for some insight about carpet replacement. We will be getting an estimate within the next week or so. When i spoke with the potential repair person who would do it I asked if it would be done at my home. he said no and that he has a building where he can put it in so that the slides can be opened. He also lead me to believe that they have to jack up/ raise the slides to install the new carpeting.

In all the research I did I didn't see any owner mention anything about raising the slide. Am I getting some run around?

We had sheet vinyl installed to replace the carpeting, except in the slides. Best thing we have done to the coach. If you search on my user name you will find details and pictures.

Couldn't find what you are referring to. Your name brought up 3 pages of threads but I only saw one thread that pertained to flooring and no photos. Can you post or PM me the link to the thread ?

The repair person was against installing vinyl because he said the slide needs the carpet to properly move in and out. The last thing I want to do is make it look pretty inside and then have troubles with the slides movements.

I'm also curious as to what others who have hired the job out have paid for the project. My MH is 32' with 2 slides and more than likely is the same basic design as most others in that size range. If you are willing to share your price here I would appreciate it or if you would prefer to PM it, that is fine also.

Had the carpet and sheet vinyl replaced in our super c a few years ago. I would have left the vinyl alone but it had a long cut in it so had to replace it as well. We had a local carpet company do the work. We brought the coach to them and they parked it behind the building with the slides extended. The vinyl was straight forward and quarter round was put down as they obviously couldn't go under the cabinets like the factory does. Before bringing the unit to them, I unbolted the dinette and sofa and stored the dinette on the bed. the sofa was moved to the passenger side that had the vinyl flooring while they installed the carpet. There was no need to lift the slides even though the carpet extended to and perhaps a bit into the slide opening on the floor. If they do need access, they can bring the slide in just a hair until the floor of the slide just starts to lift. The carpet in the slide area was measured and cut and then they bound the edge. The bedroom was a piece of cake and the whole thing came out much better than the factory job with much higher quality carpet. You might be surprised how inexpensive it is as there is not much carpet in these things.
I have actually thought about replacing my perfectly good carpet in our bounder just because a higher quality carpet looks and feels so much nicer.

As I have stated many times- the slides do NOT need to be "jacked" up, altered, or taken out. Those that tell owners that are looking to charge you many bucks for something that is not needed. I know what I am writing about.

We had new carpeting installed last winter. Our slides drop down when extended so they are flush with the coach floor. When slides are retracted, the slides first raise, then come in.

The carpet team installed the carpet on the slides first. They just partially retracted the slides so that they were at the top position before leveling off to come into the coach. Then (from under the lip of the slide) they unscrewed an aluminum trim bar with a fancy right-angle screw driver. They wrapped the carpet around the leading edge of each slide applying a liberal amount of smelly glue, then screwed the aluminum trim plate back in.

When they installed the main floor carpeting, they had the slides fully extended.

The pictures below show the slide in the "partially retracted" position so they could wrap the carpet and access the aluminum trim plate.

No need to jack up the slides in our case. YMMV.

We had the dealer install carpet into a new 2014 Thor Challenger (38 feet with three slides). As I recall it cost about $1500 and as far as I know they didn't raise slides to do it. Your's may depend on how the existing carpet is laid though. I suppose if it is under the slides then they may have to.

Did you use an RV specialist or did you use a home carpeting company?

LSC9901: We used a home carpeting company that has a team who does RVs. The owner of the company has had a couple of Class A's himself, so I knew I was doing business with the right person!

The owner (pictured below) was actually part of the install team!

x2 what Ernie says. No need to remove or jack up slides in any RV I've ever seen, but they do have to be fully opened. I've replaced the carpet in my own (3 slides) and have assisted a friend with his (different brand) RV. Carpet in mine and vinyl plank in his.

There is a lot of labor involved in RV flooring, so the cost per sq ft is typically substantially greater than a house installation. Lots of cutting and fitting and almost no large areas where you quickly and easily roll out a big piece of carpet.

There is a mobile RV flooring guy in this area (central Florida) who comes to your house or site with a crew of 2-3 guys and can do most jobs in one day. Last I heard, costs ran around $2000-$2500 and he gets good reviews too..
