I wouldn't hesitate to ask the carpet cleaners to clean the cabinets as well. They have attachments that will clean upholstery and will access the cabinets very easily.

I have the same low pile carpet that is on the ceiling in all of my above the waist cabinets and closets. Below the waist cabinets have the same carpet as on the floor. I carry a Hoover carpet shampoo machine with an upholstery attachment and it works great to keep things clean. I personally would not take mine out because it keeps things very quiet and I would prefer to maintain what's there rather than put something else in there. I've had the hard surface cabinets and don't want to go back to them.

Shoes are not part of my indoor attire, so carpets stay clean with regular vacuuming and I enjoy the feel and quiet they provide. Kitchen and bathroom are tile floors, so no carpet around the toilet, shower or sink.
