You can thank the beloved EPA for Caterpillar, no longer manufacturing a highway engine.

Wow... I asked my first question on this site and was amazed at the responses and suggestions for considering Cat vs. Cummins. We did a stint of full-timing a few years ago .... nested for the past 6 yrs. and now the full-time bug has hatched and we're dying to get back on the road. I will be reading everything that interests me on this site. Great resource from folks who are the reasons we want to return to full-timing ... it's all about the helpfulness of people.
Thank you from the GWN (Great White North)

I have been told the Cummins will get better MPG, but that also depends on several other factors. I like the Cat but have a Cummins and It's just fine. Just make sure you get something that has a proven history. The new ones bother me.

We have a Cummins and are very satisfied. I also recommend a side radiator.
I saw a little sign near the fuel fill on a semi one time that read "Cat Food". for that reason alone I wish we had a Cat.

I have those above both my fuel doors. I also have sticker of Sylvester the Cat with the logo "Cat Powered" on the coach.

With my CAT C-12 I might be considered biased, but as the advertisement used to say....
"if it's not a CAT it's a dog!"

Have had both, the CAT was a 300 HP 3126 in a 37' side radiator DP. We now have a Cummins ISC 350/1050 (now 435/1200 thanks to Banks) in a 41' side radiator DP.
The CAT was short on torque in the hills around here. Side by side with a Cummins (ISC 300/950) of the same make and size and ours without a toad (CAT 300 3126) and his with we were even on pulling power.
One of the reasons for trading to a larger rig was to get a Cummins with more HP/torque, the other was my DW wanted a different floor plan.

After years of trucking I have had several Cummins engines and a couple of cats. I myself prefer the Cummins. In my experience Cat parts were always more expensive than Cummins. My coach has a 8.3 Cummins 350 hp and it does quite fine pulling our 4500lb toad through the mountains. If I would have found a coach that I liked with a Cat I wouldn't of refused it. Mine also has a side rad. and it makes it much easier to do maintenance due to easier access to everything. Good luck in your search.

Might call it a fish instead of a Cat. Two have been hauled of the park on a hook (wrecker) in the last two days.

If you are definitely choosing between a Cat and Cummins do careful research.
If your mind was not set on a diesel I would offer you the following advice.
I have had a diesel coach for 10 years, and I know how to use it!
It is approacing 125,000 miles, (and I have a bank account rapidly approaching 0.
All I can tell you is: for much less money & far less maintenance, "WOW, I SHOULD have had a V-8"!
