caulk replacement

my 06 itasca has a metal valance strip over the storage bay hinges. the entire length has developed a running crack in the silicone. small hair line crack, but just needs replacement. i've tried razor knife gently and the calking will loosen but come up gummy and incomplete. i've googled the "how to" sites and haven't had much luck. help please---need some working suggestions. thanks

I have picked up a product, DAP Silicone-be-gone , but not had time to try it out.
DAP, lists on the package as a Canadian company, and the product is for bath tubs, but says it's ok for fiberglass and Aluminum, indoor outdoor use. May be a USA equivilant in the plumbing department, also look for plastic razor blades/scrapers, to prevent paint damage.
