Check engine light

I have a 2005 Fleetwood Expedition which is on a Freightliner chassis with a CAT C-7 engine. A couple of times over the last month the check engine light has come on, although so far it has not stayed on more than several minutes. All other gauges appear to be normal , both fuel filters and the air filter has been changed about a 1000 miles ago. Engine oil and filter also have been changed approx. 1000 miles ago. Basically the coach is running normal. I do have approx. 60,000 miles total. Could it simply be trying to alert me for some sort of routine service ? I welcome any input.

Thanks in advance.

Even if the fuel filters were changed ~1000 miles ago you could have gotten bad batch of fuel. If you have 2 fuel filters one may be a water separator type, you might check to see if you have water.

Also check coolant level.

Do you have the ability to retrieve fault codes?

Good idea on the water in the separator / filter. I will check.

Coolant level is good. I do not believe I have the ability to check for codes.

On my fuel filter with the water separator there is a knob at the bottom you can turn to drain it. Take a small container and drain some fuel and see if there is water in it. On my other filter there is a ~clear plastic bottom, I take a flashlight and see if I can see any Algae or crude in it.

I had algae one time when I first bought the coach, a black slimy/stringy type build up, it almost choked the filter closed. I now use Biobor Algaecide if the rig is going to be parked any length of time. I also keep the tank full to reduce condensation.

Until you retrieve the fault codes you're spinning your wheels by guessing at the cause. There is a plethora of reasons why the check engine light could activate, throttle sensor, coolant levels, bad sensors. Get on line and do a search for "Cat C-7 fault codes" and you'll see lines and lines of codes. I wouldn't start throwing money at it until you find a reason. ScanGuage is a cheap solution as well as Silverleaf monitoring system. Otherwise you need to take it to someone who can pull up the codes and decider them for you. Good luck with your problem.
